EVENT CALENDAR

FEBRUARY PATTERN RESOURCE:
As we referenced last newsletter, a really good resource for colors, expressions, and body movements, please consider going to your local library or used book store and look for Gnomes or Secrets of the Gnomes by Rien Poortvliet and Wil Huygen. Both books were a
great inspiration for the creation of February’s patterns. Of course, for a pattern for the male gnome, go to www.woodcarvingillustrated.com under the free patterns section. The Santa pattern was the pattern from the cover of the Wood Carving Illustrated Hand Carved Holiday
Gifts. This is a special edition that is mailed out free with a two-year renewal or can be ordered for $9.95 at their website.
You'll find pictures of gnomes on our Carvings page.

July10: 29th Annual Woodcarvers Day: 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Old Mistick Village, Mystic CT.   This is a free outdoor show in the Apple Orchard put on by the Mystic Woodcarvers.

There is no meeting in August. Enjoy your summer!

Fall dates at the CT Forest and Park Association Building:  September 12, October 3, November7.  See you then.

We are always looking for ideas for new seminars. Please let us know what techniques, projects
or skills you would like to see demonstrated.

FALL CARVING PROJECTS:
Given everyone’s differing interests, we are going to be trying something different. We are going to be running simultaneous seminars for the next three months. As always, blanks will be available at a nominal cost. Instruction, as always, is free.

Bellamy Eagle:
John Haley Bellamy (1836 – 1914) was a noted New England folk artist, known for his highly stylized carved wooden eagles and other decorative items for ships and homes.  Bellamy was born in Kittery, Maine in 1836, and stayed there for much of his career. Later in his life he lived and worked elsewhere in New England. Although carving was his
primary means of supporting himself, he never considered himself to be an "artist," and he is not known to have signed any of his pieces. His eagles are highly desired in the collectors' market. We will be carving an eagle inspired by his work.

Chip Carving Seminar:
We will be offering another chip carving project. The exact pattern will be determined shortly.

Ghost Figure in the Round:
We will be running a video instruction on how to carve a ghost. This is a little kid with a sheet over his head. This is a four-part video available on www.woodcarvingillustrated.com. The website was recently updated and has free videos. We will be running the 4 part series. It runs about 20-25 minutes. Basswood blanks will be available for $2.00 each.

Other Seminars to be Announced: We may do additional seminars as you may request.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a long time member Filomena Vincenzo.

The entire membership is wishing those who have been or who have had family who have been
incapacitated and have been going through health problems a very speedy recovery. For those who
have been though the loss of a loved one, we send you our well wishes and prayers. If you need
assistance in getting to our meetings, please let the officers know and we will try to see if we can assist in getting you there.

On a happier note, we just received a note from George Fowl. He was our treasurer for the club for
many years. He now lives in Arizona and would like to connect via email. Please contact Warren at
ctvalleywc@yahoo.com for more contact info.
Leo Hein, President

TOOL PATTERN FOR THE WALKING STICK CLASS:

If you were at the Walking Stick class the last few years or at the shows at the Carousel Museum, you may have had the opportunity to use the shaving horse to hold you walking stick to take the bark off. This is a wonderful tool to hold your work. Ever thought about either making or getting one? Well, we found a relatively simple pattern that with some basic tools most people can construct. In the May 2008 issue of American Woodworker. On page 63, they have step-by-step directions and a pattern for creating your own. With a 2x10x12ft piece of common lumber and a few pieces of hard wood, you can make a shaving horse. For more info on getting the magazine, go to
www.america nwoodworker.com.
